Our Watch welcomes the opportunity to provide a submission in response to Australia's Disability Strategy Review.
It presents an opportunity to consider the experiences of women and girls with disabilities and develop dedicated actions to prevent violence in Australia's Disability Strategy. Committing this approach alongside the application of a 'disability lens' to the First Action Plan under the National Plan will ensure a more comprehensive approach to the safety of women and girls with disabilities – which is critical given the findings of the Disability Royal Commission.
Our submission draws from Changing the landscape and the Framework for action to prevent violence against women and girls with disabilities, published in July 2024. It outlines a set of recommendations for the Commonwealth Government and state and territory governments.
The review, in the context of the recent response of Commonwealth and state and territory governments to the Disability Royal Commission Final Report, provides an opportunity to ensure and recommit to strong government leadership and coordination in preventing and responding to violence against women and girls with disabilities.
