Australia’s national violence prevention organisation, Our Watch, said today’s second National Cabinet meeting on gender-based violence has provided an important focus on the issue and produced some welcome announcements.

Chief Executive Officer Patty Kinnersly welcomed the national attention on the crisis of gender-based violence, which so far this year has allegedly claimed the lives of 49 women.

“Today’s announcement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of $4.7 billion to address gender-based violence is welcome recognition of the importance of a nationally-coordinated approach, and of all parts of the system working together to end violence against women and children,” Ms Kinnersly said.

“Every level of government has an important leadership role to play, including through funding, and the announcements today were welcome recognition of that role.”

The National Cabinet announcements focus on funding and supporting frontline services, stopping violence from escalating, a greater focus on perpetrators, more support for children and young people and recognise the role of systems and harmful industries like alcohol in exacerbating violence.

“We welcome the announcement of funding for legal assistance services, as well as a new five-year partnership agreement between the Commonwealth, States and Territories from July 2025 with new matched funding to ensure important work across the sector can continue.

“We need all parts of the system to work together and while today’s announcements are important, we know there is much work to be done.

“Importantly, National Cabinet today also recognised and committed to an ongoing focus on violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

“We look forward to continuing to play our role in working with Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments as key leaders across primary prevention, early intervention, response and recovery, as well as organisations and communities across Australia to end violence against women and children.”
