Building strong foundations to support primary prevention of violence against women outlines key actions governments can take to ensure that the essential foundations to support this long-term work are in place.

    Overview

In this policy brief we outline key actions governments can take to ensure that evidence-based foundations are in place to deliver effective primary prevention approaches. This brief translates the complex concept of prevention infrastructure into a concise, action-oriented format.

A circular diagram of the essential foundations for primary prevention. At the centre of the circle is ‘Prevention Infrastructure’. Branching from this circle are the eight foundations for a national approach to primary prevention:
Sustained political leadership.
Policy, regulatory and legislative reform.
Mechanisms for coordination, collaboration and quality assurance.
Mechanisms for workforce and sector development.
Strong evidence base, informed by ongoing data collection, research, practice and evaluation.
Monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
Private sector, civil society and community leadership.
A well-resourced, independent women’s sector.

Encircling the diagram are the outcomes of investing in these essential foundations: Strong enabling environment, increased reach, sustained prevention outcomes, expanding sector.
